Dr. Sayaka Weis Tokumitsu (she/her/ella) is a board-certified family physician and geriatrician who serves as the Geriatric Medicine Curriculum Lead for the Charles R. Drew University Family Medicine Residency Program. She is also a Family Medicine-Geriatric Medicine Attending Physician at Martin Luther King, Jr. Outpatient Center (MLK OPC) in South Los Angeles. She completed her Family Medicine Residency training at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, followed by a Geriatric Medicine Fellowship at Kaiser Permanente, Los Angeles Medical Center. She has launched a Geriatric Assessment Clinic at MLK OPC to improve access to cognitive and frailty evaluations. Dr. Tokumitsu is actively dedicated to providing excellent comprehensive primary and geriatric care to older adults. Long term, she is committed to training future generations of primary care physicians to apply key principles of Geriatric Medicine to address the complex needs of older adults in vulnerable and marginalized communities.

Dr. Tokumitsu is a proud mother of two young children who provide a vibrant and joyous outlet for maintaining wellness. She loves days at the Zoo with Family, attending Alternative Rock Music Concerts, and traveling.

Research Interests

Her research interests are in racial health disparities impacting older minority adults, with clinical motivations in health disparities in polypharmacy, cognitive assessments, dementia care. As part of the Charles R. Drew University Family Medicine Residency Program, she is actively involved in the ongoing development of wellness activities for the residents. Along with her Family Residency role, she also serves as the third-year Family Medicine Clerkship Co-Chair for the newly independent Charles R. Drew University College of Medicine.
