California State Public Works Board Approves $10 MILLION in State Bond Funds
The California State Public Works Board authorized the release of $10 million in state bond funds on Monday for the construction of Charles Drew University’s new, state-of-the-art Life Science Research and Nursing Education building.

Former Congressman Mervyn M. Dymally, who made a personal appearance before the board to urge the board’s approval of the funds earmarked under the legislation he originally authored, said the decision paves the way for the final disbursement.

“Now, we can breathe a sigh of relief,” Dymally said. “The funding is essential to the survival of this project.”

Stalled for months in the Joint Legislative Budget Committee, the funding slowly began moving down the pipeline last month after Legislative Black Caucus members Sen. Roderick D. Wright (D-Inglewood) and Assemblyman Isadore Hall (D-Compton) pressured to break the logjam.  Sen. Wright and Assemblyman Hall have CDU in their districts.

“It would have been unconscionable to allow this agreement to fail,” said Sen. Wright. “This is a multimillion dollar project that will bring health education and health care to thousands of people in my district and throughout Southern California.”

The $10 million in funding will go towards paying the debt on the university’s $43-million Life Science Research and Nursing Education building, which represents the largest single investments in South Los Angeles in 25 years. The two-story, 63,000-square-foot building is located adjacent to the university’s main administration building.

The building will also house the nursing school, named in honor of Mervyn M. Dymally, the former California Assemblyman, State Senator, Lieutenant Governor and U.S. Congressman, whose legislative work was critical to building the new school.

The scientific research facility will include space for laboratory, clinical research and support functions for the College of Medicine and the College of Science and Health. Officials at Charles Drew University have already begun hiring faculty and recruiting students for the Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing, scheduled to open next year.
