About Los Angeles Pediatric Society (LAPS)
The Los Angeles Pediatric Society (LAPS) established the Eve and Gene Black Summer Medical Career Program in 1969 with the purpose to encourage high school students to choose careers in the health professions. Self-described as a medical mentor program, students are selected to work under the supervision of a health care educator/medical facility coordinator at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital. Participants shadow various medical professionals (nurse, nutritionist, pharmacist, lab technician, physician, and/or medical specialist, etc.) who together provide a range of patient care services.
