CDU Participates in Taste of Soul 2023
CDU was a proud sponsor and participant of the 2023 Taste of Soul Family Festival – which CDU has supported and participated in for the last 12 years.
“This is one of the largest community street festivals in California and it’s the place to be to interface and interact with community residents of not only South Los Angeles, but all of Los Angeles County,” said Cynthia Davis, CDU Assistant Professor and Co-Director of CDU Kedren Street Medicine Project. “This facilitates University programs being showcased at a community-based venue to provide direct health-related services to the community; especially medically under-resourced communities of color.”
The Office of Admissions staff along with CDU students representing all programs attended the festival to engage with attendees and share information about CDU and our academic programs.
CDU Kedren Street Medicine Program was also present and conducted outreach by offering diagnostic screening services including HgA1C, blood pressure and cholesterol screenings as well as HIV screening utilizing the 20-minute Ora Quick home testing kits.
They also set up educational exhibits focusing on Narcan and Fentanyl education, mental health education and disseminated free face masks and COVID-19 home testing kits. The CDU Kedren Street Medicine Program served over 235 individuals who stopped by the exhibit space.
The Black Maternal Health Center of Excellence also had several staff on site disseminating materials about their various programs as well as they set-up a “lactation Booth” for nursing mothers as well as had several “gravity chairs” available for mothers to rest and relax.
Diapers and other items new parents need for taking care of a newborn were also distributed by the CDU team
