CDU Celebrates Transition to Mervyn M. Dymally College of Nursing
CDU recently hosted a special ceremony honoring the name change of the Mervyn M. Dymally College of Nursing (MMDCON).
“The Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing opened 13 years ago, and because of our steady and strategic growth, we have transitioned to the Mervyn M. Dymally College of Nursing,” said Dr. Gail Washington, Dean of the Mervyn M. Dymally College of Nursing. “The college is a beacon of light and hope for diverse communities needing health care, access to knowledge, and excellent, responsible leadership. We will continue to forge the path to a world without health disparities.”
The college was established to tackle the growing demand for nurses who can provide healthcare in South Los Angeles and similar communities across the nation and throughout the world.
It’s named after Dr. Mervyn Malcolm Dymally, who was a Democratic politician from California who advocated for CDU to open a nursing school.
He served in the California State Assembly and the California State Senate, was the 41st Lieutenant Governor of California, and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.
The Mervyn M. Dymally College of Nursing seeks to advance the science and art of nursing by conducting nursing research and providing nursing students with high-quality education that emphasizes the health status of underserved communities, for the purpose of enabling graduates to provide evidence-based nursing care with dignity, respect and compassion to all nursing clients.
The college, which has grown significantly since it was established in 2010, graduated its first doctoral students during the Spring 2023 commencement ceremony. The college was also recently distinguished by U.S. News & World Report as one of the Best Nursing Schools.
