CDU Awarded $2 Million Grant From the National Institutes of Health
CDU has been awarded a $2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
The grant, “Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science Research Endowment Program,” will support efforts to expand the Urban Health Institute (UHI), expand master’s degree programs in the University’s College of Science and Health (COSH), and enhance diversity of the scientific workforce.
“We are thrilled to receive this generous grant from the NIH,” said Dr. David M. Carlisle, CDU President and CEO, who serves as the principal investigator for the grant. “This significant investment will empower us to further our commitment to reducing health disparities, advancing health services research, and fostering diversity in the scientific community.”
The funds from this grant will support various components, specifically faculty and staff salaries, bioinformatics and biostatistics software, scientific writing, publication fees, and post-doctoral/bridge funding for the period of June 2023 through May 2024.
The potential positive outcome of this grant is the increased diversity of the scientific workforce engaged in minority health and health disparity research at CDU and its surrounding community.
“CDU proposes to build upon successes funded since 2006 through previous NIMHD endowment-generated income,” said Caroline Farodolu, Interim Director, Urban Health Institute. “Specifically, CDU plans to extend and expand its health services, community-engaged, and biomedical research capacity and infrastructure within the NIMHD-Endowed Urban Health Institute by creating a Learning Health Systems and Learning Health Communities (LHSC) Core.”
This award adds to the University’s academic mission of education, research, clinical service, and community engagement through assisting in their efforts of helping reduce health disparities, fostering diversity in the scientific community, and expanding research initiatives.
