Caps, Gowns, and Cheers: CDU’s GradFest
CDU hosted GradFest 2024, an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the latest graduating class of Mighty Lions. The event was held in the Student Center Lounge and students were also able to purchase their graduation regalia and CDU branded merchandise. The event featured music, free headshot photos for the soon-to-be graduates wearing their caps and gowns, and informational booths.
Alumni Relations Manager, Maruska Moore, was present throughout the event to provide support to the incoming alumni.
“I’m here to help them in any capacity that they’re looking for, whether it’s internships, placements, continued education programs, or our mentorship platform rolling out in the fall,” said Moore. “I’m here to let them know that we are here and available for them; our support doesn’t stop after they graduate, we’re here for them during their career.”
A highlight of the event was the debut of “Drew,” the new iteration of the University’s lion mascot.
“The mascot that we had before was amazing but the one that we have today is bringing a lot of life back to campus,” said Kolini Coleman, Director of Student Life. “It’s fitting, the graduating class are the folks that came in during the Covid-19 pandemic, so we also wanted to make it that much more special which is why we have a combination of accolades today.”
One of those special students is Sheyenne Ndubaku, a graduating student of the Entry Level Master’s Nursing Program, who enjoyed the tight knit and family environment of the University.
“I’m really excited and just feel really blessed that I made it through because it was a difficult program,” explained Ndubaku. “I’m married and I’m happy that I found my group of friends who are also married with kids, so we kind of went through the same struggles getting through the program.”Ndubaku’s message to the new class is to “continue to work hard, study, and don’t get discouraged because it’s going to be difficult, but just know that it’s really going to be rewarding in the end.”
GradFest serves as a reminder that as these Mighty Lions prepare for their next chapter, they carry a sense of belonging and a network of support that will accompany them through life’s journeys.
