Public health focuses on protecting the health of communities and populations through disease prevention and health promotion. A Master of Public Health (MPH) is a graduate-level degree that provides students with the training essential for careers in the public health field. It covers topics, such as biostatistics, environmental health, epidemiology, health policy, and social and behavioral sciences to address public health challenges.
Application Service
To apply to most public health schools in the U.S., you must use SOPHAS. This allows applicants to apply to multiple programs by submitting a single online application. However, it’s important to note that not all schools and programs are part of SOPHAS. If a program does not use SOPHAS, you will need to apply through their graduate school application process.
Graduate Records Exam (GRE)
The Graduate Records Exam (GRE) is required by some public health schools and programs. It evaluates a candidate’s verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing. The GRE may be a factor considered for admission decisions.
Many Master of Public Health programs do not have listed prerequisite courses. It’s desired that applicants demonstrate quantitative skills/abilities. This can be demonstrated through coursework, standardized tests, or research.
Recommended Courses:
One semester of Statistics: MTH 150
One semester of Epidemiology: BSPH 301
One semester of Health Psychology: PSY 425
Requirements often vary from one school to the next. Students should verify course selection with individual programs.
