Purpose: To select applicants with attributes congruent with the university and Physician Assistant Program Mission and Goals.
The PA Program will strive to select candidates desiring to improve the health of medically underserved communities; candidates with backgrounds diverse in both education and experience; candidates with strong interpersonal skills, professionalism and cultural competence; candidates willing and eager to collaborate with a variety of health care professionals; candidates with personal ethics, integrity, creativity, empathy, critical thinking skills and the desire to advocate for patients and the community.
Definition: The Charles R. Drew University Physician Assistant Program is committed to the principles of equal opportunity in education. In accordance with the Charles R. There are no specific policies or practices that favor specific groups of applicants. Each application is reviewed and the merits are considered individually. We do not accept previous experience or medical training for advanced placement in the Physician Assistant program. All students are expected to complete all didactic and clinical elements of the training.
- To be considered for an interview candidates must at a minimum posses the following:
- ALL prerequisites MUST either be met or in progress:
- Baccalaureate degree
- Transcripts: regionally accredited institution or evidence of a U.S. equivalent baccalaureate degree based on a foreign credential evaluation (from approved organizations)
- The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL ): if applicable
- Minimum Total Score Required: 100
- Minimum Speaking Score Required: 26
- Completion deadline: all prerequisites must be completed prior to May 30th of the application year
- General Biology with lab (8units): Mammalian or human biology
- Microbiology with lab (4 units)
- Human Anatomy with lab (4 units)
- Human Physiology with lab (4 units)
- Combined Human Anatomy and Physiology: acceptable in place of separate Anatomy and Physiology courses but must include lab and equal a total of 8 units
- General Chemistry with lab (8 units)
- Introduction to Statistics or Biostatistics (3 units)
- College Algebra or higher (3 units)
- English Composition (6 units)
- Behavioral Sciences (Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology) (6 units)
- Medical Terminology (3 units)
- Statement Letter/Essay must be submitted through CASPA
- References must be submitted through CASPA
- Must have three or application is incomplete
- Completion of the Centralized Application Service for Physician Assistants (CASPA) application by the designated deadline
- Competitive Applicants: As with most PA programs, The Charles R. Drew University PA Program is competitive, and applicants are expected to present a strong academic record, diverse direct patient care experience, and an intelligent statement letter.
Competitive candidates are preferred to possess the following:
- Cumulative and Science GPA of 3.00
- Prerequisite GPA of 3.00
- Direct Patient Care (DPC) Experience of 2,000 hours
- Organic or Biochemistry: upper level chemistry courses with lab are preferred and count toward total general chemistry requirement of 8 units
- Spanish (3 units)
- No more than 2 prerequisites pending at time of application
- Academic prerequisite completion timeline: completion of all courses within 7 years preceding application to the program

Please note that while not required, the Charles R. Drew Admissions Committee has identified the following value-added items which will be noticed and considered on an application:
- Evidence of commitment to social justice, community wellness and healthcare needs of underserved populations.
- First Generation College Students.
- Applicants from Medically Underserved Areas
- Applicants showing commitment to practice in medically underserved areas.
- Admission Contingency: If offered admission after being interviewed. Matriculation into the program will be contingent upon:
- Completion of pending prerequisites by deadline
- Pending prerequisite grade requirement of 3.0 minimum
- Successful completion of background check and drug screen
