Charles R. Drew University Mobile Testing Project
Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science was the first organization in Los Angeles County to be funded by the Los Angeles County Health Department to pilot and implement a dedicated mobile HIV testing project. The HIV Mobile Testing Project has been operational since 1991. To date, the project staff has provided free HIV screening services to over 60,000 community residents. Initially funded by the Los Angeles County Health Department, supplemental funding for the project was also provided by the Magic Johnson Foundation and Burroughs Welcome Pharmaceutical Company in order to purchase the mobile van. Project staff canvas Los Angeles County communities daily throughout Los Angeles County in order to increase access to HIV screening services and to identify individuals who are HIV positive and do not know their HIV status. Any HIV-positive client identified on the mobile van is referred for immediate medical treatment and follow-up. The Program Director of this project is Cynthia Davis, MPH.
