Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences Program Celebrates 10 Years
Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science’s College of Science and Health (COSH) is celebrating an incredible milestone as the Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences Program marks 10 years of preparing motivated students for careers in medicine, biomedical research, public health, and other health professions.
What began as an ambitious idea has grown into an academic community that has expanded opportunities for students from communities historically underrepresented in the biomedical sciences while strengthening the healthcare workforce. The program combines advanced scientific education with hands-on research, faculty mentorship and community engagement with an emphasis on global and urban health disparities and social justice.
“From the very first semester, our students are immersed in research and paired with faculty mentors who guide them through investigations in basic science, clinical, or community-based research, culminating in a public thesis presentation that showcases their scholarly achievements,” said Dr. Jorge Artaza, Professor and Department Chair of Health and Life Sciences.
Over the past decade, students have presented research at national conferences, including the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students, the American Federation for Medical Research, and Research Centers in Minority Institutions meetings.
Program alumni have continued their education and careers in medical, dental, pharmacy, physician assistant, public health programs, as well as doctoral studies, biotechnology companies, and research institutions across the nation. Many have gone on to institutions including UCLA, USC, UC Davis, UC Riverside, NYU, UCSF, Columbia, Boston University, Tufts University, Howard University, Morehouse School of Medicine, Meharry, Drexel University, and CDU’s College of Medicine.
“These successes are not accidental,” said Dr. Artaza. “They result from the effort of dedicated faculty mentors, supportive staff, and institutional leadership working together toward a common purpose.”
As the program enters its second decade, its commitment to preparing students for opportunities across the biomedical sciences and health professions remains strong.
“The need for highly trained biomedical professionals continues to grow and Charles R. Drew University will continue to answer that call,” said Dr. Artaza.
