CDU Launches Genetic Counseling Program to Expand Access to Training and Genomic Healthcare

Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science is expanding access to genetic counseling education through the launch of its new Genetic Counseling Program, designed to increase representation in the field and prepare students to serve communities that have historically had limited access to genetic counseling and genomic healthcare.

CDU’s Genetic Counseling program uses a flexible hybrid learning model that combines online coursework with required on-campus sessions once each semester and a mix of on-site and remote clinical rotations. The inaugural cohort includes six students from across the country, including Los Angeles, Northern California, Louisiana, Michigan, and Florida.

“This is an exciting opportunity to change the genetic counseling field and improve representation from all individuals in the U.S.,” said Dr. Raluca Kurz, Genetic Counseling Program director. “Our goal is to educate and train a diverse group of students interested in becoming genetic counselors, while allowing them to remain in the communities where they live and hope to serve.”

Genetic Counseling is a relatively rare occupation, with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reporting approximately 4,200 total positions in the U.S.

“Some people may not want to pursue a career in this field because positions in the field are sometimes hard to find,” said Dr. Kurz. “I think what sets our program apart is that we seek students from their communities and our goal is to train them, to serve those communities.”

CDU’s Genetic Counseling program incorporates workforce development into its curriculum, including training on developing business plans, applying for grants, networking, and identifying opportunities to create genetic counseling positions in communities where they may not currently exist.

The program’s hybrid model is also intended to reduce some of the financial and logistical barriers associated with relocating for graduate education while allowing students to remain connected to their communities.

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative supports students in the program through discounted tuition and an annual stipend.
