Community Partners Gather at CDU for Maternal Health Forum and Family Support Resource Fair

The campus of Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU) hosted the Maternal Health Forum and Family Support Resource Fair, bringing together new and expecting parents, caregivers, and families for a day focused on connection, learning, and support.
The event was presented in partnership with the Office of Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell, Black Women for Wellness, CDU’s Black Maternal Health Center of Excellence (BMHCE), Hispanas Organized for Political Equality (HOPE), and community partners. The forum provided community members with access to resources and information about maternal mental health initiatives taking place across South Los Angeles and Los Angeles County.
Dr. Bita Amani, Co-Founder and Strategic Advisor of CDU’s Black Maternal Health Center of Excellence, was among the featured speakers and highlighted the Center’s mission, research, and ongoing efforts to advance Black maternal health and improve outcomes for families.
“It’s really important that community members in South LA know that they’re being supported in the maternal health space,” said Robin Oliver, Health Education Specialist with BMHCE. “While disparities continue to exist for Black and Brown mothers and families, there are many organizations committed to supporting them in the fight for equal health outcomes and positive pregnancy experiences.”
For nearly 60 years, CDU has served as a trusted anchor institution in South Los Angeles, creating spaces that promote health equity, education, and community partnership.

“CDU has always been a pillar, not only in the South LA community, but in the maternal justice community,” said Oliver. “Hosting this event on our campus speaks to our longstanding history and commitment to advancing health outcomes in South LA and across L.A. County.”
