CDU President and CEO Dr. David M. Carlisle Elected to the National Academy of Medicine
Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU) President and CEO, David M. Carlisle, MD, PhD, has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM).
Election to the Academy is among the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine, recognizing individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service. Dr. Carlisle was recognized for successfully integrating three separate colleges (medicine, health sciences, nursing) into a single university focused on social justice and health equity for underserved populations. He also skillfully led the University’s College of Medicine to achieve preliminary accreditation status as an independent four-year medical program, which welcomed its inaugural class in 2023.
“I am deeply honored to welcome these extraordinary health and medicine leaders and researchers into the National Academy of Medicine,” said NAM President Victor J. Dzau. “Their demonstrated excellence in tackling public health challenges, leading major discoveries, improving health care, advancing health policy, and addressing health equity will critically strengthen our collective ability to tackle the most pressing health challenges of our time.”

Established originally as the Institute of Medicine in 1970 by the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine addresses critical issues in health, science, medicine, and related policy and inspires positive actions across sectors. The newly elected members bring NAM’s total membership to more than 2,500, which includes more than 200 international members.
