Rotation Curriculum: Community-Based Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in Los Angeles
Our Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship is built around community-based training. Fellows work with children, teens, and families across South Los Angeles and greater LA, serving communities with unmet needs and limited resources. Training emphasizes health equity, trauma-informed care, and culturally responsive practice. With a distributed model, you gain experience in inpatient, emergency, outpatient, school-linked, and residential settings, so you graduate ready for a wide range of careers.
Year 1, CAP 1: Foundations in Community Behavioral Health
CAP 1 fellows start with the Community Behavioral Health Block Rotation, an introduction to the strengths and needs of the populations we serve. Core clinical experiences include:
Inpatient Psychiatry
Partial Hospitalization Program, PHP
Consult Liaison Psychiatry
Adolescent Psychiatric Emergency Department
Inpatient Pediatric Neurology and Neurodevelopmental Clinic
Year 2, CAP 2: Advanced Outpatient and Systems-Based Care
CAP 2 fellows deepen outpatient skills and systems collaboration through:
General Outpatient Continuity Clinic
Wraparound Services
Collaborative Care, including ACEs Clinic
Psychotherapy Clinic
Residential Treatment Services
Group Site Visits to community partners such as the HUB Child Abuse Clinic, Special Needs Network, Juvenile Halls, and local School Districts
A year-long mentored research experience
These visits expose fellows to interdisciplinary teams, innovative community models, and real-world approaches to child and adolescent mental health.
