CDU Hosts Los Angeles County Health Survey Results Event

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health hosted the LA County Health Survey launch event on campus.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health hosted the LA County Health Survey launch event on campus. CDU President and CEO, Dr. David M. Carlisle, and the College of Medicine Dean, Dr. Deborah Prothrow-Stith provided opening remarks during the event. Their remarks testified to the importance of academic and public health system partnerships for collaborative research, action, and dissemination of public health messaging.

The unveiling was held in the LSRNE building and included an overview of the Los Angeles County Health Survey, insights from Dr. Barbara Ferrer, Director of LA County Department of Public Health, presentations on data-driven policy and program implementation, and a comprehensive Q&A session with attendees.

The 2023 Health Survey collected information from 9,372 adults and 7,391 children pertaining to community health, including health status, health conditions, health behaviors, social determinants of health, and more.

The survey revealed the ongoing disparities in health, access to care, housing, and economic stability for Black and Latinx adults. In comparison to the other racial and ethnic groups surveyed, these communities specifically were found to experience poorer health outcomes.

These gaps stem from economic and social factors influenced by historical discriminatory policies, practices, and current injustices, that have endangered Black and Brown populations, increasing their risk for unhealthy outcomes and behaviors.

The Los Angeles County Health Survey is a periodic, population-based survey that has been conducted by LA County Department of Public Health since 1997. The survey gathers vital data on health behaviors, conditions, neighborhood settings, and the needs of LA County residents, informing future public health policies and programs.
