Dr. Shaheen is an epidemiologist with medical and public health degrees. She has an extensive experience and training in epidemiology and biostatistics. She has 12 years high level experience in teaching at UCLA and CDU and 18 years experience in research methods and implementation in clinical and community settings. She received an outstanding teaching award and an outstanding service award from the UCLA School of Public Health. She received her M.D. degree and her Masters Degree in Internal Medicine from Cairo University School of Medicine where she practiced internal medicine for ten years. She received an Outstanding Award from the Ministry of Health in Cairo for her services and accomplishments in the field of internal medicine. She received her M.P.H and her Ph.D. in Epidemiology from the UCLA School of Public Health. Dr. Shaheen’s research activities have been concentrated on health related issues with special emphasis on the research among minority population. In collaboration with Professor Frerichs from UCLA, she developed and published a rapid survey methodology for small communities. She utilized her unique experience in rapid small community based survey methodology in conducting several population based surveys in minority population in California.

Dr. Lee received his BA in mathematics from UCLA and his MS and PhD in biostatistics from UCLA. He has taught basic statistics and design methods at UCLA and in the California State University system for the past 31 years. He has also been involved in the design and conduct of numerous clinical trials and is the author or co-author of more than 200 papers and abstracts. He has also written two seminal texts in immunology and biostatistics.

Dr. Norris’s research interests focus on the impact and outcomes of chronic kidney disease in African American and Latino populations, the role of vitamin D in chronic kidney disease, calcium management in end-stage renal disease, and hypertension. He is currently a principal investigator or co-investigator on 11 National Institutes of Health (NIH) sponsored trials, researching such diverse topics as health disparities in chronic kidney disease, testosterone and muscle function, self-management of diabetes, and transcendental meditation in cardiovascular disease. Dr. Norris is a member of the NIH Study Section for the National Center for Research Resources and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, the National Kidney Foundation’s Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative Advisory Committee, and the NIH/National Center for Research Resources Clinical Research Working Group. A frequent presenter in both professional and academic settings, Dr. Norris has co-authored more than 100 papers, including journal articles, reviews, and textbook chapters, and over 100 abstracts. He is editor-in-chief of the journal Ethnicity & Disease.

Dr. Yoshikawa is board certified in both internal medicine and infectious diseases and has received a certificate of added qualification in geriatric medicine. He is a member of several professional organizations within the field of internal medicine, infectious diseases, microbiology, geriatrics and gerontology. He was a member of first ABIM Geriatric Test Committee for (the added qualification in) Geriatric Medicine. In 1994, he was selected by the American Geriatrics Society for their Milo D. Leavitt Award, given to a nationally recognized eminent educator. In 1996-1997, he was Chair of the Clinical Medicine section of the Gerontological Society of America, and in 1999, Dr. Yoshikawa was appointed Chair of the Practice Guidelines Committee of the Infectious Diseases Society of America. He was section editor (Aging and Infections) for the journal, Clinical Infectious Diseases (1999-2002). In July 1, 2000 he was appointed by the American Geriatrics Society as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, and was reappointed in 2005. Dr. Yoshikawa’s research interests have been in the area of infectious diseases, host responses and aging. He has published (or in press) over 185 scientific articles, 16 books, and 71 book chapters.

Dr. Heslin received his PhD. in Health Services Research from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Dr. Heslin was a predoctoral fellow in the National Institute of Mental Health/UCLA AIDS Research Training Program. He is currently an assistant professor in the department of ophthalmology at the College of Medicine, Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science. Dr. Heslin’s work focuses on access to health services and health outcomes in underserved populations, particularly persons with HIV/AIDS and substance misuse problems. He was a collaborator on the HIV Costs and Services Utilization Study, the first nationally representative study of HIV patients in the U.S., as well as the UCLA Homeless Women’s Health Study. He is currently principal investigator on a study funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse to examine the role of provider supply, poverty, and other aspects of the social environment in explaining racial/ethnic disparities in mental health services use and addiction-related outcomes among substance abuse treatment clients in California. He has experience in the analysis of patient-reported health measures, using both classical psychometric methods and, more recently, item response theory.

Dr. Bazargan is a Sociologist/Gerontologist with extensive training in field of Research Methodology and Statistics. He earned his Ph.D. from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo and also holds Master and Bachelors degrees in Sociology and Demography from SUNY at Buffalo and University of Tehran, respectively. Dr. Bazargan's research activities have been concentrated entirely on health related issues among underserved minority population. He has published extensively on health issues of elderly African American persons. Dr. Bazargan has conducted several large population-based survey of health care utilization and health related issues among underserved minority.
Dr. Bazargan has the expertise, skills, and many years of solid experiences as health services researcher, having conducted several community-based research and interventions to support the development and enhancement of core courses and in-depth interdisciplinary training necessary for mastery of the fundamental skills, methodologies, theories, and conceptualizations of research investigation. As the PI for several clinic and community-based interventional projects (including Healthy Communities Access Demonstration Program (H-CAP) and the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) projects), he has a demonstrated record of successful and productive research projects conducted in underserved communities.

Dr. Vadgama has extensive experience in conducting oncology research that integrates clinical, basic and community-based research. The outcome of these efforts has resulted in the development of translational research. He served as the Principal Investigator of the Drew site on an NCI-funded breast and colon cancer grant in collaboration with the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center (Dr. Franklyn Prendergast was the overall PI). Since, 2003 he has provided leadership in running the U56 program between CDU and UCLA. He has played a key role in mentoring several research projects in this partnership. In addition, he is the Associate Program Director for the Minority Biomedical Research Support (MBRS) Program, a research grant for institutional infrastructure development. Dr. Vadgama is also the PI for the NIDDK Short-term Education Program for Minority Students.

Dr. Wolf holds ASHA certification in Audiology and California Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensing licenses. Dr. Wolf is a Fellow of SENTAC, the American Academy of Audiology, the California Speech-Language-Hearing Association, and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. He recently received the Dorothy Dreyer Award for Volunteerism from the American Speech-Language Hearing Association. Dr. Wolf is currently is the Chief of Communicative Sciences and Disorders at the King/Drew Medical Center in Los Angeles. He also serves as the Chair of the Institutional Review Board at CDU. Dr. Wolf has conducted research on auditory evoked potentials, with recent emphasis on clinical applications. He has also published and presented papers at the local, state, and national level on healthcare reform, healthcare financing and reimbursement, managed care, treatment outcomes, and legislative advocacy. His current interests are focused on evidence-based practice and cost effective delivery of services, medical education, faculty development, cultural competence and health disparities.

Dr. Friedman is board certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. He received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University in Chemistry and Biological Sciences and his MD-PhD from Mount Sinai School of Medicine, with his PhD from City University of New York in Pharmacology. He completed his Internal Medicine residency from University of Michigan and his fellowship in Endocrinology at the National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Child, Health and Human Development. He held a faculty appointment in the Endocrinology Division at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center prior to coming to Charles Drew University. His basic science research interests are in pro-hormone processing as related to drug addiction, diabetes, thyroid disease and obesity. He is also studying the effects of nicotine on the hypothalamic, pituitary, adrenal axis and the effects of opiates on genes and proteins. His clinical interests are adrenal, pituitary, thyroid and fatigue disorders.

A fellow of the American College of Physicians, Dr. Davidson is also a member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation, American Diabetes Association, American Federation for Clinical Research, and The Endocrine Society, as well as other professional organizations. He is past president of the national American Diabetes Association and cofounder of that organization's Los Angeles chapter. Dr. Davidson has acted as a diabetes consultant for numerous pharmaceutical companies, and principal or co-principal investigator for clinical studies of diabetes mellitus treatment. He has received the Banting Medal for Distinguished Service and the Upjohn Award for Outstanding Physician Educator in the Field of Diabetes from the American Diabetes Association. Dr. Davidson serves on the editorial boards of Geriatric and, Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice. He is the founding editor of Current Diabetes Reports, editor-in-chief of Diabetes Care, and an associate editor of Endo Trends. The author of more than 350 articles, book chapters, reviews, editorials, and abstracts, Dr. Davidson has lectured extensively at medical meetings, conferences, and symposia in the United States and abroad.
