MASTER OF HEALTH SCIENCE-PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT (PA)

Program Director: Lucy Kibe, DrPH, MS, MHS, PA-C

The PA Program recruits students who believe in the importance of sharing medical knowledge to benefit the global community. The PA program provides students with the skills necessary to become exemplary medical providers. The goals of this research course are as follows:

  • To encourage students to develop a compassionate approach to the challenges faced by those who are in vulnerable and under-represented populations in receiving quality and equitable health care.
  • To provide an opportunity for students to experience health disparities by learning from community engagement and other professionals who are involved in activities with an underserved population.
  • To help students explore their individual prejudices, preconceived perceptions, and biases that influence their clinical interactions and decision-making.
  • To introduce and promote competency in the development of basic communication skills in organizing and developing a working relationship with patients who are stressed.
  • To help students recognize signs of burnout and opportunities for self-care and overall wellness.

Twenty-six students participated in the Psychosocial Dynamics in Healthcare Compassion Training. The students and faculty voted for the top 3 groups to participate in Student Research Day. The students were trained on compassion and conducted research. They utilized the GHOST (Generosity, Hospitality, Objectivity, Sensitivity, Tolerance) Model by Dr. David Martins to produce short videos. The short videos were based on a component of the GHOST model. Social medicine is incorporated throughout the curriculum and will prepare students to recognize and address social determinants of disease; as well as advocate for social justice for patients within the local and global community.
