Dr. Vidya Kaushik Outstanding Service Award

Dr. Vidya Kaushik was awarded this year’s “Outstanding Service Award” by the Academic Senate Committee at Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science.

Dr. Kaushik, a longtime chairman of the Academic Senate Committee’s budget and finance committee, has enjoyed a long and distinguished career at Charles Drew University. He is a past president and former member of the Board of Directors of the American Heart Association of Greater Los Angeles, an organization which honored him with the Heart of Gold award. Dr. Kaushik is a former member of the LA County Emergency Medical Services Commission. And last year, he was awarded the CDU President’s medal.

“When the committee met and reviewed the supporting documents of all the nominees, it was clear that Dr. Kaushik’s long record of service to the University and community at large placed him head and shoulders above what the majority of us do,” said Dr. Samantha Gizerian of the Academic Senate Committee. “He is a great asset to the University and the community, especially in his retirement. The committee felt he deserved our recognition.”

Dr. Vidya Kaushik received his M.D. degree in 1964 from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India. He completed his internship and residency at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.

He was boarded in Internal Medicine and Cardiology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. He was on the teaching faculty before moving to the United States of America (USA). He completed a Clinical Fellowship in Cardiology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, CA.

At Charles Drew University and at King/Drew Medical Center, Dr. Kaushik served as Director, Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory; Interim Co-Chairman, Department of Internal Medicine; and Director of the Coronary Care Unit. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine and Cardiology. He was the Chief of Cardiology, Executive Vice-Chair and finally Interim Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine. Dr. Kaushik, who retired from the university two years ago, spends most of his time doing volunteer work.

“Volunteer work is my passion,” he said. “When I worked I volunteered on part-time basis and now volunteering is my fulltime job.  Thanks to my thirty one years of service at Charles Drew University, I can afford to pursue my life long obsession”.
