Carlisle Named President of Charles Drew University

LOS ANGELES - David M. Carlisle, M.D., Ph.D., the sole finalist for president at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, officially became the president- designee today.

In signing his contract, Dr. Carlisle becomes the sixth president in the university’s history, and will begin his duties July 1, 2011.

“I’m excited for an opportunity to serve this university, these students, staff and faculty, and the many underserved communities the university serves medically,” Dr. Carlisle said. “My contribution will model our mission—to serve others with excellence and compassion. I believe Charles Drew University is an institution on the rise.”

M. Roy Wilson, M.D., chairman of the Board of Trustees, cited Dr. Carlisle’s experience at a state agency; his long service as a college professor; his local, state, and national ties; and his voluntary efforts as key reasons why Dr. Carlisle was chosen to lead the university.
“We think he’s a great fit, and will lead Charles Drew University to greater prominence,” Dr. Wilson said. “Since his announcement as a sole finalist, I’ve received nothing but positive reaction, both locally and nationally.”

Dr. Carlisle was offered the position after spending time on campus, meeting with students, faculty, staff and representatives from local organizations, who help to shape the university’s relationship with underserved communities.

Introduced at a forum with standing-room only, Dr. Carlisle was well-received by the campus community. He outlined some elements of his vision for the university, while describing his long-term roots to Southern California and his years of voluntary service work.

“He made a strong impression, and the enthusiasm has carried over from that visit. We have high hopes for his presidency,” said Richard S. Baker, M.D., provost and dean, College of Medicine. “Dr. Carlisle is the right man, at the right time.”

Added Gus Gill, M.D., the senior advisor to the president: “He truly understands the poor and disadvantaged. He has voluntarily demonstrated his commitment to the underserved, so our mission is not an adjustment for him.”
