CDU President Dr. David Carlisle Delivers 2023 CDU State of the University Address

In his 11th CDU State of the University address, Dr. David M. Carlisle, President and CEO of Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU), spoke to one of the largest in-person audiences ever gathered for this annual event.
Held on the Keck Lawn of the CDU campus, the address had the theme “CDU at a Crossroads” and focused on the university’s achievements, ongoing initiatives, and future plans.
Dr. Carlisle emphasized the contributions of the CDU family in the success of the University, calling out many students, alumni, faculty, staff, and partners for their specific achievements and dedication to advancing the University’s mission and vision.
He also reiterated the importance and CDU’s commitment to supporting the community and residents around South Los Angeles and beyond.
“We are not just in the community; we are part of this community and that is a role we take very seriously,” he stated.
The speech highlighted significant program achievements, including the ranking of the Mervyn M. Dymally College of Nursing by U.S. News & World Report and the Biomedical Sciences Enrichment Program receiving the 2023 Inspiring Programs in STEM Award.
Dr. Carlisle also lauded the opening of CDU’s first 4-year MD program, marking it as the only such program offered through a Historically Black institution west of the Mississippi.
Looking ahead, Dr. Carlisle outlined CDU’s vision for the Watts-Willowbrook area and the university’s future.
“Our north star? Excellence—in our students, our programs, our entire university, and for our community,” he said, emphasizing the focus on community service and student experience that has driven CDU’s success for over five decades.
The address closed with a message of commitment to CDU’s enduring mission.
“Every step we take, even the challenging ones, moves us closer to fulfilling our vision of a world without health disparities,” Dr. Carlisle concluded.
