Welcome to the Academic Senate
The Academic Senate of the Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science is hereby constituted to give the University’s governing faculty an effective voice in academic policies and in the oversight of their execution in order to advance research in medicine and allied sciences, to train successive generations of leaders in those fields, and to protect and enhance the wellbeing of people living in underserved communities of Los Angeles and of the world.
The Academic Senate of the Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science is a federation of the governing faculties of the University’s colleges. Everyone who holds a regular-series Academic or Career Academic faculty appointment in one of the colleges (as Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor) is a member of the Senate once their appointment has been duly approved by the Appointments and Promotions Committee of their college or of the university. (See Bylaws for more details)
Message from the President
David Martins, MD, MS
I wish to express my sincere gratitude to the faculty members who considered me fit for nomination for the presidency of the Academic Senate of Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU). I am indeed humbled by this nomination, but stand ready to embrace the challenges that will come if I am elected as the president.
CDU has weathered many deadly storms in its 50 years of existence with its devoted and dedicated staff and faculty. I have witnessed changes on the CDU campus in my two-decade affiliation with the institution. I believe strongly that the university’s leadership and faculty are stronger now more than any time in the recent past and have the capacity to put the institution back on its mission track and growth trajectory.
As the president of the Academic Senate I will honor the mission for which some in the community paid the ultimate price. I will work with the university administration to motivate and incentivize the faculty to move the university up to its proper place in the league of American universities. I will foster and facilitate collaboration and collegiality between the university administration and faculty by promoting a culture of transparency, responsiveness, accountability, commitment, truthfulness, integrity, openness, and nondiscrimination.
As a faculty leader, I will support a strong and sensitive leadership across the schools and colleges of Charles R. Drew University, but I will not hesitate to confront bullies, strengthen wimps, and chastise cowards in whatever place and positions I encounter them. My sincere hope and dream is that no faculty would have to be left behind in this noble endeavor to take this university to the next level. Thank you and May God bless and keep us all.
