Joint Communication From CDU President David M. Carlisle, MD, PhD, Academic Senate President Mohsen Bazargan, PhD, and Board of Trustees Governance and Nominating Committee Chair John Yamamoto on Shared Governance at CDU

September 18, 2014

On September 10, 2014, Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU) leaders from the faculty, administration, students, and the Board of Trustees convened at the downtown Los Angeles offices of The California Endowment to begin a new shared governance journey. Facilitated by noted governance consultant Zeddie Bowen, PhD., this joint leadership retreat proved a promising start and reinforced our shared commitment to long term success of CDU, its students, and its mission.

During the course of the day, we sat together and spoke openly with one another about our shared interest in advancing the CDU mission, in meeting CDU's near term challenges and preserving its long term sustainability, and reconciling our respective roles to promote alignment and unity of purpose. Without mincing words or ignoring issues that cause tension, we engaged each other with fellowship, goodwill and mutual respect. We recognized that by making our opinions and views transparent, paying attention to the issues that challenge us, and listening to each other, we can and will promote trust and shared understanding. Our dialogue revealed significant shared vision. We all desire the shared direction, alignment, trust, engagement, and open communication that are the foundations of sound shared governance. The thoughtful participation of CDU students reminded us of why CDU exists and of our great responsibility to them.

We have much more work to do.

We will continue the conversation to refine and restate our collective vision of shared governance. We will continue the conversation to improve communication and promote shared understanding of the issues that we must address as a unified CDU community. We will continue the conversation in order to reconcile and improve our various governance documents, policies and procedures. We recognize that shared governance does not mean that all of us will always agree on all things. However, we desire the kind of open communication that enables understanding of various points of view, promotes alignment, and fosters shared responsibility for the welfare of CDU and its people.

This joint announcement reflects our respect for and commitment to each other and to our beloved CDU as we pursue this endeavor together.

Thank you.

David M. Carlisle, MD, PhD, President and CEO, CDU
Mohsen Bazargan, PhD, President, Academic Senate, CDU
John Yamamoto, Chair, Nominating and Governance Committee CDU Board of Trustees
