JAZZ AT DREW MUSIC FESTIVAL A SMASH HIT; SELLOUT PUTS EVENT BACK ON THE MAP AS MAJOR SOUTHLAND MUSIC FESTIVAL

Stellar lineup featuring Earth, Wind & Fire, Sheila E., West Coast Get Down and more garner six-figure ticket sales

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (October 10, 2017) — Over 2,000 attendees from all over Southern California enjoyed a day of incomparable music, food and networking opportunities at the 20th Jazz at Drew music concert on Saturday, October 7, 2017. The all-day outdoor festival took place on the campus of Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU) in Watts and featured electrifying performances from Grammy-winning group Earth, Wind & Fire, Los Angeles’ own West Coast Get Down featuring Kamasi Washington, Miles Mosley and more, SoCal favorite DW3, music pioneer Eloise Laws, and the Fernando Pullum Community Arts Center Band. Drummer extraordinaire Sheila E. closed the show with an ultimate mix of her most popular tunes as well as songs from her newest album, “Iconic.”

The event garnered over $100,000 in ticket sales alone and sold out at the box office. As one of the most chronically underserved areas in the county, South Los Angeles is not home to many large-scale concert events and residents often have to travel to other parts of town to see their favorite acts. The success of the Saturday, October 7, event demonstrated that local residents will support big-name entertainment – if given the chance and venue to do so.

“We have two goals for Jazz at Drew:  First, as a fundraiser, it helps support CDU student scholarships, services and campus facilities.  Second, as a concert, it provides South LA with a first-class entertainment event as part of our commitment to bring as many resources as we can to the community in which we live and work.  This year’s lineup was one of our biggest ever, and we are honored to have been able to bring quality entertainment at a great value to the residents of South LA and beyond,” said CDU President Dr. David M. Carlisle.

Jazz at Drew was also well-attended by VIPs and elected officials known for dedicating their time in office to fighting for social justice in underserved neighborhoods in Los Angeles and around the country, such as Representative Maxine Waters (D-CA), L.A. County Supervisor Dr. Mark Ridley-Thomas, Senator Steven Bradford (D-Gardena), as well as representatives from the offices of Representative Nanette Barragan (D-CA 44th District) and assembly member Mike A. Gipson (D-Carson), respectively.

Tickets to Jazz at Drew not only secured customers a seat to the show, but also status as donors and supporters of CDU. Proceeds from Jazz at Drew go towards enriching the CDU experience for students by funding University scholarships and pipeline programs, including the renowned Saturday Science Academy II, which encourages South Los Angeles students to excel in math, science and technology.
The day’s festivities were emceed by popular radio hosts Pat Prescott of 94.7 The Wave and Roland Bynum of 102.3 KJLH.

Presenting for sponsor the event was Dignity Health.
