Why: Each year many events celebrate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on its national Holiday weekend.   Over the past 15 years, CDU hosts this Jr. White Coat ceremony to inspire future generations of multicultural children to embody the teachings of Dr. King—Unity between the races, the importance of education and breaking through barriers to highly esteemed fields of education, such as medical careers.  Note: In the health professions, White Coats are given to medical students at the beginning of their studies. This symbolic ceremony will showcase what the students have learned and the SSA II Jr. White Coats are presented when students successfully complete 24 weeks at CDU.

How:  In the King Drew Magnet High School of Medicine and Science, the event takes place in the gymnasium with throngs of parents seated in the surrounding bleachers in support of the students.  Fathers stand on post in visible support. The students are seated in rows in center court and are called forward to receive their coats after a brief program featuring speakers. A reception will follow.
