LOS ANGELES, CA – Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU) is pleased to announce the establishment of the Sue and Bill Gross Nursing Endowment with a $1,500,000 gift paid over three years. This is the largest individual contribution awarded to the University’s Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing since its opening in August 2010.

The generous donation was made by Bill Gross, founder, managing director and Chief Investment Officer of PIMCO, a global investment solutions provider, and his wife, Sue, the Gross Family Foundation president.

“CDU is a hidden gem, providing unique, quality training for a future health care workforce,” said Sue Gross. “Bill and I hope that this endowment leaves a lasting legacy in the South Los Angeles community;  inspires a new generation of leaders in nursing; and helps to address California’s nursing and nurse faculty shortage.”

Recipients of this scholarship, known as Sue and Bill Gross Nursing Scholars, will be enrolled at CDU’s Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing. Preference will be given to students with demonstrated financial need and who come from Service Planning Area 6 (Athens, Compton, Crenshaw, Florence, Hyde Park, Lynwood, Paramount and Watts).

“We began working with the Grosses last year and we are honored that Sue and Bill Gross have given the University their vote of confidence and recognize the impact that their endowment will have on the lives of CDU students and our community,” said Dr. David M. Carlisle, President of Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science. “By supporting the Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing, they will give promising students the financial support they need to pursue a career in a high-demand profession. The track-record of CDU alumni assures me that our nursing graduates will promote wellness and provide care with excellence and compassion in South Los Angeles andsurrounding  areas .”
