To address the growing demand for nurses who provide health care in South Los Angeles and similar communities across the nation and throughout the world, the Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing plans on admitting it’s first cohort of forty students in Fall 2010. It is our goal to educate and train students who will achieve excellence in patient care and become innovative leaders that will help improve diversity and cultural sensitivity in the nursing workforce.

Our two-year, six semester program is designed for individuals from non-nursing backgrounds to pursue a graduate degree in nursing. Students will be eligible to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) and the Clinical Nurse Leader certifying examination upon graduation from the program.

Admission Requirements:
Eligibility requirements for the MSN Program are as follows:

  • Have a completed baccalaureate degree from a U.S. regionally accredited college or university (or evidence of a U.S. equivalent baccalaureate degree based on a foreign credential evaluation)
  • Recommended cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in undergraduate study
  • Hold a current RN license in the State of California and in the state you reside in (or show evidence of application for a California RN license) – for Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) and Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Tracks
  • Completed prerequisites:
    • Anatomy with Lab
    • Physiology with Lab
    • Microbiology with Lab
    • English Composition
    • Sociology
    • Speech
    • Psychology
    • Nutrition
    • Statistics

 

For the Entry Level Track, the following 4 of the 9 prerequisite courses must be completed within 7 years of application to the program and applicants must also submit official GRE scores as part of their application materials. 

  • Anatomy with Lab 
  • Physiology with Lab
  • Microbiology with Lab 
  • Nutrition

Application Requirements :
For admission consideration, prospective students must submit the following application materials:

  • $100 Non-refundable Application Fee
  • Two official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended (International students with foreign academic credentials are required to submit an official foreign credential evaluation by a CDU approved foreign credential evaluation service.) 
  • Personal Goal Statement – The personal goal statement should be no more than two pages. It must be written in your own words. It should describe the applicant’s:
    Interest in and potential for contributing to the field of nursing, and how the statement is aligned with the mission of CDU and the Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing (MMDSON), Career objectives, and Self-assessment of the applicant’s interpersonal skills, verbal and written skills, computer skills, and general preparation for succeeding in a graduate program in nursing.
  • Current Resume or Curriculum Vitae
  • Three (3) Letters of Recommendation (academic and professional)
  • Official GRE Scores (for Entry Level Track only) – The GRE school code is 4257; Department Code is 0216. The preferred score on the GRE is 1000 (combined Verbal & Quantitative) and a Writing Analysis score of 3.5.
  • Copy of a current CA RN License and the state you reside in (for Clinical Nurse Leader and Family Nurse Practitioner Tracks)
  • Verification of  Employment/Evidence of Recent Clinical Experience (for Clinical Nurse Leader and Family Nurse Practitioner Tracks)

      Other Important Information:

      • The program was granted initial approval by the California Board of Registered Nursing in June 2009.  The Western Association of Schools and Colleges granted its approval in March 2009.
      • The first nursing education program will be the Entry Level Master of Science in Nursing.  Future programs include the Doctor of Philosophy and Doctor of Nursing Practice, as well as degree completion and undergraduate nursing programs.
      • The School of Nursing will be housed in the Life Sciences Research Nursing Education Building, which is currently under construction for completion in Fall 2010.
      • Approximate cost of the 2 year program is $56,000 (68 units at $750/unit, with professional fees).
