With more than 1,500 tickets sold and the names of three lucky winners plucked out of a glittering barrel, the drawing to raise funds for Charles Drew University’s Student Government was officially declared a “roaring success.”
“It was wonderful,” said Rev. Jeffery E. Thomas, the student government representative who shuffled the tickets before the selection. “Everyone participated—students, faculty and staff. It was an event that pulled everyone together.”
Thomas said the money raised by the drawing will help fund student activities over the course of the year. “We didn’t have a lot of money when we started the year,” he said. “This will help get us started. We hope to someday raise enough money for a couple of scholarships.”
Dr. Gail Orum-Alexander, Dean of the College of Science and Health, randomly selected the three winners at the Oct. 29th drawing. Since then, all the winners have been contacted:
- Third-place prize of $100 went to Luis Estrada.
- Second-place prize of an iPod Touch was awarded to Jerome Perault.
- First-place prize of $300 went to Sondos Islam, Ph.D., Acting Director of the Urban Public Health Program. She donated her winnings to the student government.
