Dr. Jose Luis Calderón received his MD from Harvard Medical School in 1982 and trained in Family Medicine at the Brooklyn Health Sciences Center and in Neurology at NYU/Bellevue Hospital Center, NY. He has completed graduate fellowships in Epidemiology at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, and in Health Services Research at the Health Service Research Institute of the American Association of Medical College, Washington,  
Dr. Calderón is currently an Assistant Professor at the Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science where he is director of the NIH funded Center for Cross-cultural Epidemiological Studies (DUCES), the RCMI Translational Research Network MICRO Core, and the RCMI-Biometry/Survey Research Core.  He is also director of the Drew/UCLA EXPORT Center of Excellence Measurement Core, funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research Quality (AHRQ).  His area of expertise in education and research is in cross-cultural health, cultural competence, health communication and the impact of poverty on healthcare access, utilization and health outcomes.  He has given numerous workshops and seminars in this area nationally.   Dr. Calderón is also President of the Association for the Behavioral Science and Medical Education (ABSAME) and chairs the Mentoring Committee of ABSAME.  He retired from medical practice in NY in 1993.  Since relocating to California, he has devoted his full time efforts to medical research, undergraduate and post-graduate research mentoring, research administration and medical education.

Dr. Ron Hays is Professor of Medicine at UCLA and a Senior Health Scientist at RAND. Dr. Hays has contributed to the development of research instruments to assess patient evaluations of health care, health-related quality of life, and other health outcomes. He has used these tools to assess individuals with diverse medical disorders and identify determinants of patient outcomes of health care. He has also studied adherence to medical regimens among individuals infected with HIV and other issues at the nexus of health, behavior, and the health care system. Currently, he is one of the Principal Investigators for CAHPS® II, a five-year project that extends previous research on consumer assessment of health care. In this investigation, the research team is developing measures to assess consumer evaluations of hospitals, nursing homes, group practices, and individual physicians, as well as developing tools to report these assessments to health care providers and consumers, including consumers with specific medical problems (e.g., mobility impairments). Dr. Hays has published 289 research articles and 28 book chapters. He is a former associate editor of Quality of Life Research and deputy editor of Medical Care.

Dr. Leo S. Morales is an Assistant Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine and Health Services Research at the UCLA School of Medicine and a Natural Scientist at RAND. He received a medical degree from the University of Washington and a doctorate in philosophy from the RAND Graduate School of Policy Studies. He completed a residency in primary care internal medicine at the University of California at San Francisco and is board certified in internal medicine. He is currently conducting psychometric research on the cross-cultural equivalence of survey instruments and substantive research on disparities in health care, immigrant and Latino health and cultural competence in health care. Dr. Morales is currently the recipient of grants from the Commonwealth Fund, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Morales also see patients and supervises medical residents at the UCLA Medical Center.
