SUMMER JOBS PROGRAM
Over the course of the summer, the Charles Drew University campus has experienced a burst of youthful enthusiasm.
You can see it in the way 19-year-old Mario Rincon sorts and delivers the mail or in how Jennifer Corona-Sanchez, 17, and Ernesto Rivera, 17, file and fax documents.
It’s evident at the Urgent Care Clinic, where Janaea Thomas, 16, answers the phones or in the President’s Office, where Deon Straight greets anyone and everyone who walks in with a smile.
They are only a handful of the bright young faces—43 high school and college students in all—who came to the university campus this summer to work in a summer internship program offering mentorship and on-the-job training for young people.
The students, ages 14 to 21, participate in this program in partnership with Los Angeles city and county departments and several local nonprofit organizations, including the Los Angeles Archdiocese.
“Our job is to encourage them on their way to becoming employable young adults,” said Lorraine Grey, who directs the Saturday Science Academy and heads the summer program. “We offer mentorship, improve their job skills and then when it’s finished we urge them to go back to school to continue their education.”
At a brief reception and luncheon this week honoring the students, CDU staff praised this year’s crop of interns.
“They come here looking to learn what it takes to succeed in the working world,” said Daphne Calmes, Associate Dean of the College of Medicine. “This year’s group has been so special. They are so professional, and when you speak to them they are very polite. They are eager to learn.”
Sergio Hernandez, an administrative assistant in the area of medical imaging technology, said that it has been a pleasure working with Jennifer Corona-Sanchez and Ernesto Rivera.
“They have really been helpful,” Hernandez said.
Corona-Sanchez said the pleasure has been all hers.
“I’ve had a wonderful experience,” said Corona-Sanchez, who will be attending Santa Monica College in September.
