Charles Drew University’s Media Advisor Honored
John Mitchell Named “Outstanding Community Advocate”
LOS ANGELES – At its annual Power Luncheon on Wednesday, the nonprofit Community Development Corporation Community Financial Resource Center (CFRC) honored John Mitchell, media advisor for Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU), as its “Outstanding Community Advocate” for his professional accomplishments and contributions to Los Angeles County’s underserved communities.
Community Financial Resource Center also honored new Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, Cathay Bank and Bridgit Marlo, the owner of B Chai, at a luncheon at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in downtown Los Angeles.
“We honored John Mitchell for his communication skills and his compassion for his community,” said Forescee Hogan-Rowles, CFRC president and CEO. “For three decades, John has enlightened others through his gifted story-telling and that has helped improve the lives of some of Los Angeles County’s neediest residents. We are proud to honor him for his many contributions as a news reporter and for his continuing commitment to the community as he pursues the next phase in his storied career at Charles Drew University.”
Mitchell joined CDU as its media advisor last year, after nearly 30 years as a Los Angeles Times reporter and editor. During his long career at the Times, he held several positions, including South County bureau chief, deputy state editor and general assignment reporter. He was a member of the team of Times reporters who shared in the Pulitzer Prize for coverage of the 1992 Los Angeles’ rebellion.
“Congratulations to John on this well-deserved honor,” said CDU President and CEO Dr. Susan Kelly. “Charles Drew University is dedicated to transforming underserved communities through education, research and clinical services, and John’s outstanding work here and at the Los Angeles Times exemplifies this spirit of service. We are extremely proud when others recognize the contributions of CDU’s staff.”
Founded in 1966 in response to the lack of adequate medical facilities in the area, Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science’s mission is “to conduct education, research, and clinical services in the context of community engagement, to train health professionals who promote wellness, provide care with excellence and compassion and transform the health of underserved communities.”
