CDU Program in Angola Receives National Recognition

Congratulations to the CDU program, Drew CARES in Angola for its recent recognition in the Jornal da Angola, the Angolan national paper. The program’s Angolan partners, the Angolan Military (FAA), received a prize for best practices in management in the "prevention of communicable diseases." The nationally distributed paper noted that the FAA's success was directly attributable to their partnership with CDU. The program office in Angola is lead by CDU staff member, Ricardo Ovalle-Bahamon, Ph.D. (candidate).

Dr. Eric Bing, Director of Drew CARES and CDU Endowed Professor of Global Health and HIV, recognized Mr. Ovalle-Bahamon and others for their hard work and dedication in Angola. “The success of our partnership, of which the University and the US Government can be proud, is directly attributable to the hard work of Mr. Ovalle-Bahamon, his Angolan team and the strong support of CDU faculty members, Drs. Dan Ortiz and Karen Cheng,” said Dr. Bing.

The CDU program in Angola has help train medical providers, equip hospital and clinics, test people for HIV and has reached over 45,000 people with health promotion messages. The program was also featured in an award winning PBS documentary, AIDS Warriors. CDU researchers have published a number of papers in the scientific literature documenting the effectiveness of the program.
