Class Schedule
The Learning Resources Departments of Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science offers computer courses to all members of the Drew community that will provide a strong foundation for many computer skill sets. Our goal is to work collectively to train our community in computer skills to improve competencies and communications.

Wednesday classes will meet in Cobb Building, Learning Resource Center (LRC), Room 183/185, 10am-12pm.
Thursday classes will meet in the Keck Building, Student Education and Services Center (SESC), 1 pm-3pm.

Class 001- Computer Basics (2 hrs)
- Navigating through the desktop and changing settings
- Transferring files from folder to folder and using different media (floppy’s cd’s, memory sticks)

Class 002- Smartboards For Active Learning (2 hrs)
- Learn how to use the SmartBoard systems in the Keck and Cobb buildings to turn your presentations into exciting interactive learning sessions
Class 101- Microsoft PowerPoint Basic Training (2 hrs)
- Exhibiting quantitative information
- Understanding methods of design
- Learning the basic functionality of Microsoft PowerPoint
- Creating quality presentations, slide shows, outlines

Class 102- Microsoft PowerPoint Design Features (2 hrs)
Prerequisite: Class 101 - Microsoft PowerPoint Basic Training
- Learning the design features within Microsoft PowerPoint
- Customizing the toolbar
- Launching applications from within PowerPoint
Class 103- Microsoft PowerPoint Advanced (2 hrs)
Prerequisite: Class 102 - Microsoft PowerPoint Design Features
- Learning the advanced features within Microsoft PowerPoint
- Enhancing presentations with animation
- Programming presentations
Class 104- Using Word: Web and Publication Issues (2 hrs)
Prerequisite: Must be familiar and comfortable using Microsoft Word
- Learning how to create Word files that easily convert to HTML
- Learning how to layout documents for writing grants (text wraps, tables, etc.)
Class 105- Microsoft Word Administrative Features (2 hrs)
Prerequisite: Must be familiar and comfortable using Microsoft Word
- Exploring the administrative tasks within Word (i.e. mail merging, creating labels & envelopes)
Class 106- Microsoft Excel Basics (2 hrs)
- Learning the basic functions of Excel
- Enhancing the spreadsheet
- Organizing data
Class 107- Microsoft Access Basics (2 hrs)
- Understanding the basic functionality of Access
- Learning how to initiate databases
- Explore queries and forms
Class 108- Microsoft Excel Intermediate (2 hrs)
- Produce graphs, enhance your data with pie charts, column and bar graphs
- Harness the real power behind the numbers. Formula and function basics

- Working with multiple worksheet links

Class 110- Library Resources (2hrs)
- Learning how to access the complete array of electronic information resources available on the Library's Internet Web site, the 24-Hour Library
- Discovering how to retrieve full-text journal articles, medical reference books, and timely clinical care information at your desktop
Class 111- Internet Searching (2 hrs)
- Learning the latest tips and tricks for finding needed information on the World Wide Web
- Learning tips and techniques for effectively using search services, such as Google and Yahoo and other, less known search engines

- Learn how to use the videoconferencing resources available on campus.

Class 201- Adobe Acrobat (2 hrs)
- Learning the basic functionality of Adobe Acrobat
- Understanding the advantages of using PDF files
Class 202- Adobe Photoshop, Scanning, and Fireworks (2 hrs)
- Learning how to edit and create graphics
- Understanding how to optimize the scanning process
- Learning how to create images for web viewing
Class 203- Web Basics & HTML (2 hrs)
- Understanding the WWW
- Learning the core elements of constructing web pages.
Class 205- Endnote Bibliographic Management (2hrs)
- Importing citations from Medline and other citation databases
- Creating libraries and importing citations from popular databases
- Formatting bibliographies in Word and inserting citations
Class 206- PDA (2hrs)
- Setting up preferences, using the built in applications (calendar, address book, to do list, memo pad, security)
- Learning how to synchronize your PDA with your home computer
- Learning how to find, download and install software
Class 207- DxR Clinician (2hrs)
- Learning how to access pre-designed case studies and track student knowledge processing
- Creating unique online case studies
Class 301- Dreamweaver (2 hrs)
- Prerequisites: Class 203 – Web Basics & HTML
- Learning how to develop web pages
Class 401- Encompassing All the Tools (2 hr session with follow-up session)
Prerequisites: Class 202 – Adobe Photoshop, Scanning, and Fireworks, Class 203 – Web Basics & HTML, Class 301 – Dreamweaver
- Creating a small web site with images, tables, and other objects

Audio/Visual Equipment
LCD Projectors: Project images from your computer, VCR, DVD or Camcorder.
- NEC ME-850: A large projector for big rooms
- InFocus LP755: A 9 pound portable projector
- InFocus LP340: A very portable projector (low power, for travel)
- NEC LT10: A very small portable projector for air travel
Kodak Slide Projector: used to project 35mm slide films
Dukane Portable Overhead Projector: used to project transparencies
3M Portable Overhead Projector: used to project transparencies
AV Cart: a cart equipped with an LCD projector, a VCR, and a laptop, ideal for multimedia presentations.
TV/VCR on Cart: this cart is equipped with a 26” Panasonic Stereo TV and a JVC VCR
Apollo Portable Wireless Amplifier/PA System: a very compact P/A system equipped with a lavalier mic.
Projection Screen: used with either an LCD or an Overhead projector to view projected image.
TV/VCR Combo: a 13” television with a built-in VCR
Portable Smart Board: an innovative electronic classroom. Uses a projector and a laptop to allow the presenter the ability of a white board.

Nikon Coolpix 950 Digital Camera: uses memory cards instead of film
Kodak Digital Camera: also a filmless camera using memory cards

Sony MiniDV Camcorder: a digital camcorder that uses MiniDV (digital video) tapes and has the capability of taking still shots like a regular digital camera.

Compaq Presario 1621 Laptop Computer: this laptop is usually used with the AV Cart (laptop/LCD projector/VCR)
HP Omnibook 500 Laptop Computer: this laptop is usually used with the AV Cart (laptop/LCD projector/VCR)
Dell Latitude X200 Laptop Computer: this laptop is usually used with the AV Cart (laptop/LCD projector/VCR)
HP CD-Writer recordable CD-ROM Drive: this is an external/parallel interface drive that can record data into CD-recordable disks
Iomega 250Mb Zip Drive: an external/parallel interface drive that uses Iomega 100 or 250 Mb Zip Disks to store data
