Department of Information Systems

The Information Systems Department provides a variety of services beyond the maintenance of hardware and software. We are constantly adding services, and hope that you will contact us if there are services that you would like to receive. To request services, please contact our Network Manager, James Lester, at 323-563-4994.

Services currently offered include:

Consulting and Project Management: We are here to assist you in making effective decisions about technology, hardware, software, and systems to improve your activities. This includes researching solutions, providing cost estimates, designing systems, and finding appropriate consultants. We will help you plan your technology project from start to finish. We can also assist in developing grant proposals related to technology.

Data Center: The IS Department maintains a data center that is specifically designed to safely house your servers and systems. We provide physical security, backup power, environmental controls, daily on-site backup and weekly off-site backup of data to a secure facility. We provide this service at a nominal cost, and encourage all departments and programs to consider using this facility, rather than maintain data systems in less secure areas on campus.

Server Virtualization: Technology has been developed which allows us to efficiently deploy “virtual” servers for applications, rather than install new hardware for most needs. We can provide the virtual equivalent of a new server for your department or program for considerably less cost than the purchase of new equipment. We also provide complete maintenance and backup services for virtual servers, making the package extremely cost efficient.

Programming and Reporting Support: Our programmer analyst(s) can assist you in developing necessary reporting or customizations for your systems. Services in this area are primarily focused on SQL reporting from our administrative systems, but we can also consult with you regarding other systems.

Collaboration Systems: The IS Department maintains a Sharepoint services server which facilitates online collaboration through shared virtual workspaces, document management, discussion forums and other online tools. Sharepoint can help your program work together more effectively online. Examples of Sharepoint sites include our Research Cluster sites, and the Business Portal for accessing HR and Financial data.
