Learning Resources in
the College of Allied Health are located in the Student
Education and Services Center in the Keck Building.
The SESC offers help, at no cost, to any student
or staff member who desires to improve and build
their academic skills.
The SESC offers:
Ø Computer-assisted
instruction in mathematics, writing, reading
and other curriculum supported
subjects
Ø Free tutoring in most subjects for both individuals
and small groups
Ø Academic skill building workshops—scheduled throughout
the academic year
Ø Instructional video tapes and computer disks are
available for use both at home and in the center
Ø Internet access and web based learning programs.
Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI)
The SESC utilizes Plato, a program that helps students
gain proficiency in mathematics, reading, English
grammar and in a number of other general education
areas. Plato provides a series of lessons that
specifically address individual needs. Students
may be recommended by instructors, or they may
use the Plato Program diagnostic tools to determine
which of their skills require work.
12 additional supplemental instruction programs
are available to accompany courses that are taught
in the Allied Health Curriculum.
Videos, audio tapes, compact discs and textbooks:
Student enrolled in the Medical Spanish classes
use audio tapes and CDs on a regular basis to
accompany their classroom assignments.
The SESC also has
a variety of media in various subject areas,
including study skills techniques, available
for student
use. COAH faculty also place materials on reserve
in the center for students in specific classes.
Study Skills Workshops
Study Skills Workshops are available for students,
faculty and staff and are scheduled throughout
each semester. Goal Setting & Time Management,
Memory & Concentration, Note-Taking Systems
and Test-Taking Techniques have been the subjects
of recent workshops.
Tutoring
Group tutoring is available and can be facilitated
by a faculty member or peer. In addition to being
aided by a tutor, students in group study settings
gain the opportunity to practice what they learn
while they work together, teaching each other
and learning from each other.
One-on-one tutoring is available when the need
has been diagnosed by either the tutor coordinator
or the faculty of a specific class. Both peer & professional
tutors are available to assist students in one-on-one
study sessions.
Academic Counseling
Individual and Group counseling is available Monday- Friday, 9am to 5 pm, on
both an appointment and drop-in basis. The Counselor will assist students
with planning their academic programs, evaluating their program requirements
and with other academic and personal issues as they relate to their school
experience. Scholarship Information

as other and national scholarship information & applications are posted near the SESC on the Scholarship
information board.
Career Services
This service provides a number of Computer
Assisted Programs to help in the area
of skill building and job search. The
Career Area has twelve computers
dedicated to job search efforts. Software programs include California’s
popular EUREKA job
development software, and a number
of national job search sites. Both
on and off campus job placement for
students will be available from
this center.
Audio/Visual Service
An AV Technician is available to assist
with the operation of any or all of
the audio/visual equipment found in
the various classrooms. All operators
of
this equipment must be trained by the Technician before the items can
be
used. The following items are also available for check- out from the
Student Education & Services
Center: portable slide projector, document camera, portable projector (tegrity)
and transparency projector. Please contact Cendrahaya Tjandrawan or Linda Towles
for these services. Testing
All candidates for admission to the degree
programs at Charles R. Drew University
are required to take a Pre-admission Placement Examination. The College
of Allied Health utilizes the Accuplacer
system, an online assessment system
used to provide information about a student’s level of skills and accompishment
in the areas of reading, writing and math. Other tests available are the
Self-Directed
Search Survey and the HOBET- The Health Occupational Basic Entrance Test.
Service Learning
The Student Education & Services Center houses the coordinator for Service
Learning. Students are required to complete a specific number of volunteer
hours in the community as determined by program certification. For an example,
students in certificate programs are asked to volunteer for 25 hours of service,
associate degree students must volunteer for 50 hours of services and the Bachelor
and master degree candidates will work for 100 hours in a volunteer capacity.
Students may complete their service under either of these three categories
or in a combination of these headings: 1. Service to the University 2. Assisting
in an educational environment and 3. Health care facilities. Additional information

The Student Education & Services Center contains:
A main computer area with 24 workstations and a Smart Board-LCD projection
system, used by both classrooms and individuals; A check-out system for various
equipment for classroom use; Nine ( 9) computers located in the Career Center
provide additional individuals access to technology they may need. Computers
are located in both small group study rooms, and a variety of computer software
programs are available to fit various study needs.
