Description:
The Bioinformatics Specialist will work with the Geographical Management of Cancer Health Disparities Program (GMaP) and Biospecimen/Biobanking – Geographic Management Program (BMaP) in Region 6 based out of Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science – specifically in the Integrated Clinical and Tissue Biomarker/Biorepository Program (ICTBP) in the Center to Eliminate Cancer Health Disparities in Los Angeles, CA. The Specialist will work with the Principle Investigators on a colorectal cancer project designed to create a bioinformatics and biospecimens locator database that is based initially on the ICTBP design, but is integrated throughout all Region 6 partners (which includes participating sites in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California, Hawaii, American Samoa, and Guam). The Bioinformatics will work with existing Region 6 partners to determine similar data or specimen elements, beginning with information collected by the ICTBP. Develop consensus of items by working with all partners; standardize criteria and collect information; write/develop/launch an online database and application program, with appropriate access limitations and multi-tiered access layers; provide technical support to the Coordinating Committee of Region 6 GMaP/BMaP to develop logistics related to the procedures and policies governing access of investigators to samples; use online tools to optimize, analyze, track efforts and adjust accordingly; update and maintain internal databases; update of new information into database; if necessary, on-site training of partners or community groups regarding entry of information into database, etc; and ensure that all information is correct and consistent throughout the Region. The goal will be to have a working database that will allow each of the partners to enter data about the specimens they have obtained.

Requirements:
Regionally accredited Bachelor’s degree in Bioinformatics or in a related field with strong emphasis on molecular biology and medicine required. Master’s degree preferred. Knowledge of cancer, and experience in cancer field is strongly preferred. 0-2 years of experience with basic software interfaces such as Perl, HTML, SQL, C, Java Script languages & UNIX, Mac, Windows OS's. Knowledge and experience with web development. Knowledge of National Cancer Institute (NCI) databases and programs, such as caBIG, caTISSUE, caHUB, etc is strongly preferred. Experience developing databases related to bioinformatics and biorepositories/biobanking is also preferred; especially to ascertain applicant is knowledgeable about issues around the protection of human subjects (HIPPA) and is cultural competent/sensitive to issues of biospecimens collection and clinical information for diverse communities. Excellent written and verbal communication skills also required.
