Purpose

The Charles Drew University embraces the belief that all people are created equal and have a fundamental right to determine their own destiny free from fear and coercion. IHI recognizes the uniqueness of every individual/people's world-view and this influences perception of health and health producing behavior. The IHI therefore actively chooses the empowerment model as the basis for its approach in the international arena. Through the guiding principle of reciprocity the IHI seeks to develop linkages with communities, district health centers, ministries, universities and health science centers that will assure maximum commitment, involvement, and meaningful academic and cultural exchange.

The main emphasis of the IHI is to manage and/or develop effective models of health care delivery to the underserved in a continuous reciprocal exchange between nations through:
  1. Acting as a catalyst in stimulating nationals in developing countries, to conduct culturally relevant research and development activities to improve health status and quality of life

  2. Facilitating, implementing, and managing training and technical assistance based on research and development findings

  3. Empowering nationals in developing countries to use appropriate and cost effective methods to conduct their own health care research, training and to improve service delivery

  4. Increasing the pool of ethinic minorities who work internationally
