Campus Safety

Campus Safety and Security at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science is committed to
the safety of faculty, staff and students.  CDU is considered a very safe environment for the community at large.  Although no campus is immune from violence; CDU’s ongoing programs of reducing violence on our campus is accomplished by preparing the campus community in the event that violence occurs on our campus which will minimize the risk to the CDU Community.

Safety Guidelines for Active Shooter on Campus

Campus Security Program

  • Full-Time Security Officers (armed)
  • Campus Safety Officers certified in First Aid/CPR/AED response
  • Campus Safety Officers Trained in Active Shooter response
  • Automatic External Defibrillators placed at strategic locations throughout campus
  • Support from College Nursing Facility (LSRNE)
  • Annual Emergency Evacuation Drills
  • Emergency Evacuation Routes marked
  • Emergency Call Boxes located in some classrooms
  • Emergency Call boxes throughout the CDU Parking Structure
  • Emergency Towers located throughout Campus
  • Emergency Public Address System
  • Telephones in all offices and classrooms with speakers
  • Campus Safety Officer escorts if necessary to vehicles
  • Security Cameras located throughout campus in selected locations
  • Night lighting with high intensity lights located throughout campus
  • Shuttle Service to The Green Line Train (Willowbrook Station)

Everbridge Notification System

  • Instant Alert sent via text message, email, telephone, cell phone
  • Will be used for emergency notifications
    • Incident or crisis on campus
    • Power outage
    • Other emergency notifications
  • Available to Faculty, Staff and all Students who opt into the system
  • Users will opt in and out and manage their own account

Threat Assessment and Response

  • Each member of the CDU Community is responsible for reporting any threats of violence to Campus Safety or the Threat Assessment Team (TAT)
  • All threats are taken seriously and thoroughly investigated to determine the degree of each threat.
  • CDU’s Emergency Notification System will be initialized if necessary

Training and Development

  • First Aid/CPR/AED-Campus Safety Officers
  • Active Shooter Training
  • Emergency Response Training
