Drew CARES

Drew Center for AIDS Research, Education, and Services

Education

Community education and provider training are essential to stopping the HIV/AIDS epidemic and ensuring that those infected receive the highest quality of care.

Drew CARES educates our clients and the broader community through regular community forums. Topics explored at these forums include HIV prevention, care and treatment, activism, nutrition, medication adherence and the consequences of substance abuse.

Drew CARES is a local leader in training medical providers and researchers in HIV/AIDS. Through the Pacific Region AIDS Education and Training Center’s (AETC) local site at Drew University, nearly 1,000 providers –mostly people of color– are trained each year in HIV knowledge and care. Over the past decade, more than 25 clinical social workers have been trained to care for HIV-infected clients. Additionally, Drew CARES has trained more than 20 pre- and post- doctoral researchers, as well as African HIV/AIDS physicians, in partnership with UCLA and other universities.

Drew CARES has also trained over 40,000 soldiers in Angola related to HIV/AIDS prevention and continues to educate Angolans in the military and through outreach programs at clinics there.  In addition, Drew CARES has provided training in anti-retro viral therapy and voluntary counseling and testing procedures to medical personnel in Angola.  Health care specialists in Namibia have received training in mental health services for HIV-positive clients as part of the Drew CARES program as well.
