The Phlebotomy Technician I Program at Charles Drew University is approved by the state of California and offers instruction covering basic and advanced didactic courses and clinical rotation. The Phlebotomy Technician (or Phlebotomist) is an internal member of the medical laboratory team whose primary function is collecting blood samples from patients by using venipuncture or micro techniques. The Phlebotomist facilitates the collection and transportation of laboratory specimen and also serves as the patient's only contact with the medical laboratory.

The courses in the program are designed to incorporate a combination of classroom instruction and clinical practice to inexperienced and experienced healthcare professionals. The courses include a didactic review of basic anatomy/physiology and medical terminology with in depth hands-on training in phlebotomy techniques, specimen collection, and preparation techniques.

On January 9, 2003 new guidelines were enforced by the state of California requiring all practicing phlebotomists to obtain a license issued by the state’s Department of Health Services. All certified phlebotomists and all others who are interested in becoming a phlebotomist must attend a program approved by the State of California Department of Health Services. Upon successful completion of the program, students must sit for the state board examination. Current practicing phlebotomists have until April 9, 2006 to comply with the new guidelines and obtain a state-issued Phlebotomy License.

Applicants who do not currently possess a phlebotomy certificate may apply for and enroll into Option I or Option II programs in order to meet new state issue requirements for practicing as a Phlebotomy Technician. For more information, please call 323-563-5928.
