Calculating your financial need
Approximately one to three weeks after you submit your FAFSA, Charles Drew University of Medicine & Science will receive your application information electronically from the federal processor. Respond promptly to any requests for supplemental information or documents.

Your eligibilty for financial aid is the difference between the established Charles Drew University of Medicine & Science expenses for the academic year and your expected family contribution (EFC). Your EFC is the number used in determining your eligibility to receive financial aid funds.

Determination of Financial Aid Eligibilty

Student Budget(what is costs you to attend school)
  • Minus - Parent contribution (how much your parents are expected to provide)
  • Minus - Student contribution (how much you are expected to use for your education from earnings and assets)
  • Equals = Financial Aid Eligibilty (the maximum amount of aid you can receive)
  • Outside aid (Federal Pell Grant, Cal Grant, outside scholarships, and outside loans)
  • Plus + Charles R. Drew Aid (scholarship, loan, and/or work study)
  • Equals - Financial Aid Package (this figure will be equal to or a little less than your financial aid eligibilty if you meet all application deadlines)
Determining your Award
Once your financial need has been determined, Charles Drew University of Medicine & Science will offer you a financial aid award package which may contain grant, loan, and work study. You will receive a Financial Aid Award letter which lists the types and amounts of financial aid for which you qualify.

The amount of your award depends on several factors, including the following:
  • your financial need
  • your GPA (for Cal-grant) and some scholarship programs)
  • your family's total income and assests
  • when your FAFSA was filed
  • when your financial aid application file was completed with the Charles Drew University of Medicine & Science Financial Aid Office
  • other resources, such as scholarships, VA benefits, financial assistance, etc.., that you are receiving
If you receive additional funding from any other sources after you receive your financial aid award letter, you must report the source and amount of each award to the Financial Aid Office. This information must be provided in writing, the Office of Finance will also be notified. Charles Drew University of Medicine & Science will have you sign a revised award letter if any adjustment is needed based on changes in your financial need or information we receive about other sources of funding for which you qualify.
