Annual KJLH Women’s Health Forum

In 2000, Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science collaborated with KJLH 102.3 FM radio station in Los Angeles, California to provide free comprehensive health screenings targeting at risk racial/ethnic minority women residing in South Los Angeles. The project started at a local African American church called City of Refuge and over 600 women attended the initial forum in 2000. Each year the attendance at the forum grew and the services provided also expanded. Community residents have shared with the program coordinators that “Because I am uninsured, this forum is the only time I can get comprehensive health screenings including mammograms, HIV/STD screenings, blood pressure, BMI, and cholesterol. In 2013, over 8,000 women attended the event. The project coordinators in 2013 decided it was time to target the male significant others of the women who come to the event on an annual basis. Thus, a “Man Cave” was created where men could come and receive similar health screening services. The project is supported by public and private sector funding. The CDU program coordinator for this annual event is Cynthia Davis, MPH. Professor Davis can be reached at (323) 563-9309 or by email at cynthiadavis@cdrewu.edu
