ABOUT US

Chairman: Curley L. Bonds, M.D.

Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science is the only historically minority health profession institution in the western United States. The Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science and The Martin Luther King, Jr. General Hospital were created following the civil disturbances that occurred in Watts in 1965. From a seed planted in 1966, the Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science has evolved and grown, shaped by the needs of the community it serves. Today, the University educates health professionals who have the unique skills, knowledge and commitment needed to improve lives.

The Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science in partnership with the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services operate the Martin L. King Jr. Hospital and form the Martin Luther King, Jr./Drew Medical Center adjacent to the Charles Drew University campus. Located in the heart of South Los Angeles, the Center takes advantage of its location and the corresponding diversity and complexity of its patient population, to create an academic environment unlike any other. The heart and soul of this Institution is reflected in its mission. The department offers training in psychiatry to medical students, residents in general psychiatry, and graduate students in clinical psychology.
