CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

The department participates with the LA County Department of Mental Health in offering predoctoral internship and externship programs to psychology students committed to working in a community mental health setting. Trainees function as part of a multidisciplinary team and have opportunities to work with both children and adults in a variety of settings. The goals of the Psychology Training program are to develop competent and culturally sensitive, entry-level professional psychologists as well as equip  psychologists with skills to function effectively as a psychologist across multiple settings. In order to accomplish these goals we seek to prepare trainees with the knowledge and critical thinking skills to practice psychology within a community setting. Our program is guided by the  “local clinical scientist” approach as presented in Stricker, G., & Trierweiler, S.  (1995). * This training model encourages interns to integrate scientific knowledge while considering ecological and biopsychosocial factors that are crucial in the assessment and treatment of our consumers. It is in this manner that we best foster development in multicultural sensitivity; professional identity as a psychologist; psychotherapy skills; and psychodiagnostic/psychological assessment skills in a multidisciplinary setting.

The internship is a fulltime position with salary and benefits. The internship is designed to provide clinical experiences geared toward the development of psychological skills in working with seriously mentally ill and culturally diverse clients. Interns are also provided opportunities to develop other professional skills such as consultation, supervision and teaching. Current didactics offered include a weekly intern seminar covering a variety of topics, a monthly cultural competence seminar, and supervision seminar.

The externship emphasizes psychological assessment of diverse populations. Externs are present on site 16 hours per week. Externs receive weekly supervision and participate in a weekly case conference and assessment seminar.
