Dr. Gus Gill is the first Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology at the Charles Drew University
of Medicine and Science. This program has a rich history of training Otolaryngologists from underserved minority communities. Dr. Walter P. Work, the former Chair of the University of Michigan's Otolaryngology department, introduced Dr. Gill to the King/Drew Medical center, Los Angeles so that Dr. Gill could complete his lifelong dream of providing care for the underserved.
Dr. Gill remembers his mentor Dr. Work as a man who shares similar concerns - great surgeon, humanitarian and a man of integrity. |

| In 1972, Dr. Mirion P.Bowers founded the training program as an Otolaryngology division in the Department of Surgery at the King/ Drew Medical Center with residents rotating from UCLA to provide clinical care. In 1979, the division achieved departmental status. The first resident to complete the training program was Dr. Greg Washington, who currently still provides Otolaryngology care for underserved populations, as do many of the programs alumni. |

| Dr. Gill retired from his position in 2005. Dr. Jimmy Brown has now assumed responsibility as Acting Chairman of the Department. |
