Surgeon General, David Satcher Takes a Look ...
Dr. David Satcher stops at the L A Smiles Mobile Dental Services display to see what we are doing. We were fortunate to have former Surgeon General, Dr. David Satcher, M.D., Ph.D. visit the L A Smiles Mobile Dental Services booth while at the National Urban League Convention. Dr. Satcher was intrigued with our modern spin on an old idea, House Calls. Our use of technology to help provide high quality oral health services to the community was impressive. |

House calls is an integrated system providing large scale community-based and school based dental screening, dental disease prevention programs and facilitates dental referrals and financially qualifies patients for state and federal entitlement programs. |

The Los Angeles Urban League President, John Mack pauses for a moment to visit the L A Smiles Mobile Dental Services location. L A Smiles participated in the National Urban League's annual conference held in the Los Angeles Convention Center from July 27th - 31st. More than 700 families and children received free dental screenings at the conference. This year's conference theme is Opportunity + Equality = One America. In addition to representation by the King/Drew Medical Center dental department, other departments provided, audio screening, Diabetic Screening, Hypertension screening and stroke counseling, Nutritional screening and diet counseling, Organ transplant and health information, Asthma screening, Breast screening, Safety and injury prevention, HIV and STDs, ask a pharmacist and Vision screening.

The recent national meeting of the National Association of Counties spotlighted county programs that represent innovative and creative solutions to the problems local county governments face.
The Achievement Awards program began in 1970. It is a non-competitive awards program that recognizes county efforts that modernize and streamline county government and increase services to its citizens.
This year Los Angeles County was given national attention for its mobile dental project, L A Smiles. This innovative and technology advanced community service blends the old with the new.
Through visits of its 40-foot mobile dental unit L A Smiles brings a wide array of oral health services to underserved communities. |
