RESEARCH

The faculty and residents at the KDMC Department of Ophthalmology are actively involved in research in the visual sciences in affiliation with the Jules Stein Eye Institute, and constantly publish their work in some of the most renowned journal in the field. Faculty and resident research at the KDMC Department of Ophthalmology encompasses clinical, biomedical, and health services research, and targets those diseases that disproportionately affect minority and other vulnerable populations but will not be limited in scope to eye diseases. Cancer, cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, chemical dependency, diabetes and low birth weight have been identified as health concerns that disproportionately affect minority populations in Los Angeles County, and other culturally diverse, medically underserved communities. This work continues to contribute to unraveling the root causes for the health disparities that exist for minorities and other vulnerable populations. The department strives to integrate up to date basic and clinical research findings into its standard of care, and keeps abreast of the latest findings through regular journal club meetings and research presentations. The residents also participate annually in the Association of Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) meetings where they interact with visual care professionals across the country and interchange research ideas and interests.
