Diagnostic, Treatment, and Rehabilitation Unit (DTRU)

Epilepsy telemetry is typically available only in selected referral centers, and is ordinarily not available from such other referral centers to patients in the catchment area of King-Drew Medical Center. It is therefore the primary objective of this facility to provide high-quality diagnostic services of a type not otherwise available to this patient population, for certain categories of patients whose management depends critically upon the information obtainable from telemetry.

For reasons of safety and effective management, certain categories of patients require closer medical support than is normally available on regular medical wards, but less than ICU levels of care. A second objective is, therefore, to provide high-quality medical support for such patients whenever space is available and telemetry objectives are not compromised.

It is also an objective of this facility to provide support for patients engaged in certain research or special treatment protocols, particularly with respect to measures designed to ensure their safety which may not otherwise be readily made available.

It is also an objective of this facility to maintain an atmosphere of ongoing and interactive education directed to and involving nurses, physicians, resident physicians, physician assistants, students, and patients, dedicated to the improvement of the clinical skills of all medical personnel who pass through the DTRU and to the greater welfare of the patients we serve.

Neurophysiology Laboratory

A state-of-the-art Neurophysiology Laboratory is located on the fourth floor room 4-O in the main hospital. The Laboratory provides diagnostic measurements of physiological functions related to the nervous system including Electroencephalography (EEG), electromyography (EMG), nerve conduction velocities (NCV) and somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP) for adult and pediatric patients of any age. Out-patients and medically stable transportable in-patients are typically tested in the laboratory. In-patients who are medically unstable or not readily transportable may have portable tests performed at the bedside. Types of testing include portable, sleep deprived, induced sleep (conscious sedation), nasopharyngeal, electrocerebral silence (brain death) and monitoring of anesthesia (status epilepticus
