  ABOUT US

Welcome to the Department of Neuroscience web site. Founded in 1988, the Department is a matrix comprised of interactive Neurology and Neurosurgery Divisions. As a Unit, the Department developed a skilled Neurological Intensive Care Unit and Intermediate Care Unit; a Diagnostic Treatment and Rehabilitation Unit (DTRU) for intractable or difficult to diagnose epilepsy; a Neurophysiological Laboratory with EEG, EMG and Evoked Potential capability; a Stroke Unit and NIH-commended Research Division for stroke and brain injury studies. The Department was recruited into epilepsy epidemiological study of urban epilepsy and inter-institutional landmark research on anti-convulsants in early post-traumatic epilepsy and inter-institutional traumatic brain injury programs. Skull-base surgery expertise was recruited which provided complimentary resources to the expanding ENT and Endocrine service.

Department of Neuroscience will assure that our faculty is recognized as the primary providers of quality care to patients with disorders that fall within the scope of neurological practice. We continue to work to expand the scope of neurological care as new technology for the treatment of neurological and related disorders becomes available. We are proud to be Charles Drew University and King/Drew Medical Center’s principal resource for professional and practice information, education and interaction. Finally, we will assure that appropriate clinical and basic science will address the scope of neurological and neurosurgical practice.

  Mission Statement
The Department of Neuroscience is dedicated to the missions of the Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science and the King/Drew Medical Center (KDMC). The Department is specifically committed to providing appropriate, timely and consistent standards of neurological services of the highest competence achievable with its resources. The Department is further committed to the search for new knowledge, innovative techniques and technologies relevant to this mission, and to compassionate advocacy for those the Department serves.

  Our Vision
The vision of the Department of Neuroscience is to improve the health and welfare of the greater KDMC service area through

  Service
Providing diagnostic, consultation, neurological and neurosurgical treatment and continuing care to all patients referred or admitted.

  Education
The establishment of medical student, internship, residency and physician assistant programs in the neurosciences in cooperation with the Hospital and University providing the essential resources; continuing education for the professional community, and health education for the health consumer. The Department will also help develop and participate in allied health professional training programs.

  Research
The Department conducts appropriate research with the primary orientation of finding ways and means to improve the health of the greater King/Drew Medical Center population.

  Community
Outreach Interacts with, and advocates for, the neurological/neurosurgical health care issues and needs impacting our catchment area.

The Department will continually re-evaluate its goals and priorities to assure their compatibility with those established by the Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science and Martin Luther King, Jr. General Hospital. This will be facilitated by an effective liaison with other clinical departments.

  Scope of Services
The Department of Neuroscience is responsible for the provision of appropriate emergent, in-patient and ambulatory care of patients having pathological conditions of the central peripheral and autonomic nervous system and those systems which affect the nervous system and are amenable to surgical and medical treatment. The Epilepsy and Stroke Centers of the Department evaluate, manage, educate and offer the latest in clinical research therapies for patients at KDMC and the Hubert H. Humphrey Comprehensive Health Center. The Department also offers comprehensive neurophysiological laboratory assessments in electroencephalography and electromyography
