  Critical Care Service

Divisional Faculty provide attending coverage in the MICU. Critically ill patients are admitted to the MICU, Trauma ICU and Trauma Step Down Units. There are about eight to ten patients on this service. Patients admitted to the ICU have multiple problems. Each of the faculty members are board certified in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. Extensive teaching rounds are conducted daily. Majority of the patients are on ventilators. Different topics such as respiratory failure, mechanical ventilation, shock, hemodynamic monitoring and acid-base disorders are discussed. The residents and students are provided tremendous opportunities to enhance their knowledge and experience in managing critically ill patients. In addition to the ICU patients there are about four to five critical care consults daily.

Pulmonary Consultation

Divisional Faculty provide Pulmonary consultations for the in-house patients on the Internal Medicine service as well as other services as requested. The vast majority of consults are from Internal Medicine. The diverse patient population at King-Drew Medical Center, and the immense variety of illnesses requiring Pulmonary expert consultations presents the opportunity to provide both excellent service and a unique educational experience for trainees rotating through the service. The house staff initially evaluate new consultations, with subsequent input from the Attending Faculty. A variety of procedures such as bronchoscopy or pleural biopsy are performed when indicated.

Chest Clinic

The outpatient Chest Clinic is located in 4M and is half a day per week on Wednesday afternoons. Approximately twenty patients are seen every week. The Pulmonary nurse co-ordinates the appointments and follows up on these patients. Chest radiographs are requested for review during the Chest Clinic when available. Internal Medicine house staff regularly rotate through the clinic. A variety of interesting pulmonary cases are seen the Chest Clinic. Various procedures i.e., bronchoscopy, pleural biopsy, pulmonary function tests etc. are scheduled as indicated on a case by case basis. Chest clinic is an excellent learning experience.
